I really liked the card with the abstract painting, with the mountains and black branch with leafs. And especially I enjoyed using acrylic paints, so I had to make one more card inspired by abstract, modern art, this time with summer vibes. A friend asked me what makes it abstract or modern art. To be honest, I don’t really know. I just googled, or in this case I searched Pinterest (since often Google results redirect me to Pinterest anyway) and I found few ideas that I thought I can paint. I don’t have any specific painting that I followed, don’t you worry, I didn’t carbon copy anyone. I would say, what I painted was inspired by about then different paintings, plus my own ideas. I knew I wanted to paint a cactus and there were quite a few examples that had silhouette of a cactus, similar to the painting I did with the leafs. However I wanted it to have more summer, beach vibes and I wanted the cactus to be green, since silhouettes I had in mind for another painting. Also there were few paintings that had just straight lines, no hills or anything with curves, which I found perfect… less hustle. As I said, I’m using acrylic paints for this painting. These are cheap paints I found on Amazon. The card stock is the Canson XL watercolour paper that I pre-cut into an A6 panel. I started by drawing two lines, using a pencil and a ruler to create sections to paint the sky, the sea and the beach. I used a washi tape to keep the lines straight, but you can aways paint freehand. First I painted the sky, using a flat brash. I mixed light blue with white to make it even more lighter. Then I painted the beach using a dark yellow paint and I let it dry. After the paint was dry I repositioned the washi to cover up the painted parts, so I don’t get any paint over them and I painted the see using a dark blue mixed with white. To mix my colours I used a laminated card stock, which I also used under the watercolour panel as it was much easier to clean. Once the paint of the sea was dry, I removed the washi. I was little bit worried that I will tear up the paint, but no, no damage was done. Next I painted the cactus and the sun. The great thing about acrylics is that you can paint over the painted parts, which is also possible with gouache, but not with watercolours. Here I changed the brush, it is a flat brash but much smaller and it has rounded top. Absolutely perfect for the cactus as well as the sun. I was painting in sections. First I started with the main body of the cactus. I placed a washi tape where I wanted the bottom of the cactus to be to have a straight line, but this is optional, you can paint freehand. I don’t know what are the parts of the cactus called, but I started with the middle part, the biggest part and then I painted one smaller stem, one on the right side and two on the left side. While it was drying I painted the sun. I mixed yellow with brown, which turned out almost as the colour of the beach. I didn’t really have exact shade of the sun in mind, I just knew I didn’t want it to be bright yellow. Btw. the colours and the intensity of the colour that is all up to you. You don’t have to be mixing the colours, you can always use the colour directly from the tube. To draw the circle I used the washi tape as a guide and then using the same brush as on the cactus I filled the circle with the paint. And this time the painting was much better then the sun I painted on the card with the mountains. Back to the cactus, here I painted in vertical lines using a dark green. This is optional, I was just following a painting of a cactus from a book with watercolouring ideas. I also painted that cactus with watercolours, which you can see under YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels in near future. To paint the cactus thorns (not sure if this is the correct term) I used a black fine liner and randomly drew little V-s across the cactus. Using a double side tape, I adhered the panel on top of a card base, made out of a craft card stock. Then I adhered a sentiment that says “Let’s Celebrate”, using a double side foam squares. I have bunch of sentiment banners pre-made, all of them heat embossed in white on a black card stock. That’s all for the card today.
