I really enjoy making cards that anyone can make, cards for beginners, with minimal supplies and without using major stamps or dies. You can see those cards here. Normally I make these cards where I paint with watercolours, which might be intimidating for some. Therefore for this post I made four cards and I drew a few very simple Christmas images that you can put on your Christmas cards. The supplies are very minimal, all you need is a card base, which is a blank card and a pen. As I used a card base made out of a craft card stock, I used a white gel pen, but you can also use a white card base and a black pen or even a colourful card, e.g. red with a white gel pen. I make my own card bases, but you can also buy them in a pack with envelopes. Before I used the white gel pen, I pre-drew the images with a pencil. You don’t have to do this, but this helped me with the positioning and overall look of the drawings. Also I am not the best when drawing straight lines freehand, but I didn’t want to use a ruler, as I wanted the lines to look hand drawn. The pencil lines helped me to keep my lines straight. After I was done drawing, I simply erased the pencil lines. NOTE: If you want to use a pencil, I would recommend checking first, if your pen smudges even after it’s dry. It always depends on the type of the card stock and the pen you are using. As I mentioned, I have four cards for you and I’m going to start with the simplest drawings, or better to say the quickest drawing and the last one is slightly more time consuming. All the images are very easy to draw. DRAWING CHRISTMAS TREESFor the first card I drew Christmas trees, just two simple triangles in two different sizes. You can also draw one big tree. And to decorate it, the big one I filled with circles to represent baubles and for the smaller one I drew a ribbon. The baubles and the ribbon are just outlines, but you can fill them up with the same colour of your pen, or use different colour. If you have Nuvo Drops, you can also use that instead of drawing the baubles. Lastly I wrote the greeting. Here the pencil lines came very handy, as my handwriting is very inconsistent. DRAWING CHRISTMAS PRESENTSFor the next card I drew Christmas presents, simple boxes with ribbons. The first present I drew is the biggest one on the left, with a big bow on the top. For the bow I drew three arches. The second present is a long one with a diagonal ribbon and the third present is a smaller one, I placed it above the second box and I drew this typical ribbon on the top. Again you can fill the ribbons with the gel pen, instead just doing outlines. You can decorate the boxes with some dots, stripes, hearts etc. thats all up to you. I just wanted to keep the images as simple as possible. And lastly, below the boxes I wrote the greeting. DRWAING A SNOWFLAKEOn the third card I drew a snowflake. Here the pencil lines were especially helpful. I actually used a ruler when I was pre-drawing it, not necessarily to keep the lines straight, although that was helpful, but to measure the distance between each line to keep them evenly distributed. I drew four longer lines and then in between I drew shorter lines. Altogether the snowflake has eight long and eight short spikes or arms (not sure how to call it). On each line I drew “V” shapes and on the top I drew circles. Below the snowflake I wrote a Merry Christmas sentiment. I’m very proud of this one! As I said, my handwriting is usually inconsistent and this one I manage to write quite neatly. DRAWING A CHRISTMAS VILLAGEWhen I was thinking about ideas for Christmas cards, a little winter village was one of my favourites. I really like Christmas cards with a little Christmas village. However, I didn’t have an exact idea about how I want the houses to look. I didn’t want anything overly complicated. So I searched online. At first I could not find anything that I liked, but then I stumbled across those houses that people make from cardboard that look like ginger bread houses and those inspired the look of the houses in this card. I began by drawing the images with a pencil and then I traced the lines with my white gel pen. I drew three buildings and some Christmas trees. I started with a Church in the middle, then I drew a taller building and in between I put two Christmas trees. On the other side I drew another house and between the Church and this house I drew a big Christmas tree with a star on top of it. I didn’t draw the line for the bottom part of the houses, as I knew I was going to draw some snow at the bottom of the houses. The sentiment I wrote above and lastly I drew dots across the sky to represent a falling snow. I must say, this pretty much reminds me the village where I live. They just put up a Christmas tree in front of the church. I’m not sure if it’s already light up or if they are waiting for the first Advent, which is actually this Sunday. So happy first Advent everybody! That’s all for the card today. I hope you will try making your own cards for Christmas as these cards are very simple.
