The time to make Christmas cards is finally here! I'm so excited, I love making Christmas cards! My first Christmas card idea actually developed from an idea I had for an insert for my mobile phone case. I use a clear case for my phone and recently I started making these inserts to decorate it. In the video below I make that case, but for this blog post I'm going to talk about how I made the card. The main idea for the card was the dark background and then I wanted to also have a nice Christmasy focal point. I didn't have anything specific in mind. I went through my stash and found an older stamp set from Avery Elle called Holiday Bouquet. What you choose for your focal point is up to you. I started with stamping and heat embossing the poinsettia onto a watercolour card stock. I made sure I had enough space for the greeting that I will be stamping at the end. I treated the card stock with anti-static powder, inked up the stamp with the Versamark ink and stamped the image. I used a stamping platform, so I can stamp multiple times, as a watercolour card stock is more rough. I sprinkled embossing powder over the image. I used the Metallic Platinum from Wow and heat set it with my heat tool. Next I painted the flower. I used watercolours and I first secured the card stock with a washi tape. This is to prevent warping and to get a nice border. For the flower I picked pink, green and yellow (for the middle). There are also berries, which I wanted to paint blue, but I didn't want them to clash with the blue background, therefore I decided to use a white paint that has shimmer in it and mix it with a small amount of blue. When I was painting for all of the part I was trying to create gradient. I first painted a base layer with watered down paint and then I painted second coat where I added a darker paint to the bottom of the image (leaf, petal…) and using a clean brush I moved the paint upwards. I did this especially on the petals. TIP: If you do not want to clean your brush between adding paint and moving it upwards, you can use two brushes. One you can use for the paint and one to move the colour. Once the flower was dry, I painted the background. Originally I thought I will only use a dark blue, but after I made my trial card, the background was not dark enough, so I also included black. I was actually thinking about using gouache for that, but I didn't have the colour I wanted and didn't want to do any mixing. It might have helped though, because as I was applying the second coat I felt the colour was lifting. Not sure if it is the paint (gansai paints are different), or I didn't leave enough time to dry the first layer. Maybe different painting medium would have been better. However in the end I did get a nice coat of colour. Of course you could use a coloured card stock and die-cut, but I wanted to make a one layer card. And I like that the background is not too perfect. I used the black paint only around the flower. I found it easier, even when I painted with just blue, to first go around the edges of the flower and then paint the rest. When I went in with the blue I painted over the black as well, just to blend them together. I let the panel dry and I painted a second coat, using only the blue paint. The second coat is optional, it depends on the look and if you like it. After the panel was dry I stamped a greeting. A Merry Christmas sentiment form an another stamp set and I heat embossed it using the same embossing powder as I used on the flower. Lastly I adhered the panel on top of a craft card base and I also added a few clear jewels. Just to add a little bit of sparkle to the card. I hope you feel inspired and will try making this card or something similar yourself. Make sure you check out my video on YouTube and give it a Like as well.
