How To Paint A Lightning Storm Landscape Using Watercolours | EASY PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS + VIDEO9/7/2022 I wanted to paint a landscape with a lightning storm for a while, but it looked difficult, so I kept postponing it. I could not be more wrong! This is definitely very simple to paint, perfect for beginner and it's a lot of fun. However, I didn't make a card, because I didn't know for which occasion or what kind of greeting would fit. If you have any ideas, let me know in the comments. In my video I mentioned a Halloween card... maybe? I used an A5 size watercolour card stock and I taped it to a board. Then I sketched the lightning, this is very simple, just a zig zag line and a few lines attached to that. I also started about two centimetres from the top, as I wanted it to look like the lightning is coming from the clouds. Often I prefer sketching on a piece of thin paper first and then I transfer it onto the watercolour card stock and while I did practice a bit, I realizet it is really simple and therefore I sketched directly onto the watercolour card stock. To make it easier, I would recommend looking up online photos with lightning. I follow the hashtag - lightningphotography - on Instagram, where you can find really great examples. Next I used a masking fluid and with a small brush I went over the pencil lines. I used an inexpensive brush and I also coated my brush using a soap and water to protect it. If you do not have a masking fluid or masking pen, you can first paint the sky and add the lightning afterwards using a white gouache, acrylic paint or a white gel pen. Once the masking fluid was dry, I applied clean water all over the watercolour card stock and then I used a mid-tone blue and did a light wash. This is optional, but I wanted to look like it's the end of the day, but not yet dark, so I wanted to have a little bit of colour in the background. I also didn't add any colour at the bottom section of the panel, that's where the mountains will be. Throughout the painting I made sure I kept the top part (right where the lightning started) lighter, so it looks like it comes down from the clouds. You can also keep it lighter along the lines, which I decided not to do, as I wanted to keep it simple. While the paper was still wet, I painted the first layer of the clouds. I painted it exactly the same way as I painted the galaxy and aurora sky last year. I was applying the paint in a dabbing motion, creating the clouds. I started with the mid-tone blue and dark blue as well and then I added black. The black paint I mainly applied towards the top. After I was done with the first layer of the clouds, I let it dry and then I painted the second layer. For the second layer of the clouds I did the wet on dry technique, which means the brush is wet and the card stock is dry. Again I was applying the paint in a dabbing motion, intensifying the colour. As the paper was dry, to avoid harsh edges at the places where I wasn't applying the colour, I used clean damp brush and soften that area. I let it dry and then I painted the mountains. I started by making a mistake. I wanted the lightning to go behind or touching the mountain, that means I should have removed the masking fluid. I didn't do that and noticed after I applied my paint and then I tried to remove it while the paper was wet. Bad idea! I eventually dried it with my heat tool and then I had to come back a few times to correct it. I just didn't want to throw it away and in the end I was able to correct it. The mountains I painted from lightest in the back to the darkest in the front. Using the tip of my brush I painted wavy, slightly ridged lines. Again, this is something I painted in the past and I will include a link to this painting below. I let the piece dry and the painting is finished! You could add a few trees on the top of the hill, which I did on my trial piece. And I also painted a small piece using pink and purple. So as you see there are many variations you can do. I hope you will try making this card yourself. Make sure you check out my video on YouTube and give it a Like as well.
