Although autumn has started, it is still pretty green where I live and I live in Sweden. Therefore, for this card I thought I will keep it green, paint a forest with fir trees during a gloomy, grey autumnal day. This painting is very simple, prefect for beginners. The products you need are very minimal - watercolours, watercolour brushes and watercolour card stock. To make the card you need a blank card and an adhesive. The product list is below, but you do not need what I'm using, take it as a guide, use what ever you have in your stash or you can afford. I wanted to make something more interesting than just painting a forest, although that would be nice as well. I thought painting it in a circle, would look great. I started by drawing a circle at the top half of my watercolour panel using a pencil. I will be stamping a greeting below, so I left a little bit of space for that. If you are not adding a greeting, draw the circle in the center of the panel. My pencil line was too dark and because I didn't want it to be too visible, I used my eraser and slightly erased the lines. It was visible for me to paint, but especially at the top where I was using a light paint, you would see the pencil lines, if I didn't erase it. The first part I painted is the sky, I used a black paint which I diluted with clean water to get light grey. Before I moved onto the trees I dried the sky properly, otherwise the colours of the trees would be mixing with the sky. I was painting the trees from back to front, just like I painted mountains on some of my past cards. For the back row I used my lightest green and as I was painting the row of trees I was creating a U-shape. The trees on the sides were taller and towards the middle I made them smaller. There are a few ways to paint these trees. The way I paint them, I go in a zig zag motion and I just dab the top of the brush. After I finished the first row of the trees, I dipped my brush in clean water and I applied it below the trees to spread the colour below them. This way there is no white space behind the rows below. I did this also for the last row and this would be to create the ground. For the second row I used mix of mid and dark green and I did the same as I did on the first row. And for the last row I used mix of brown and dark green, which I also used to create the ground. As you can see in the photos I didn't create a clean line around the circle, I went for more of a messy look, especially at the bottom. To finish up the painting, I painted a few birds using a black paint. They are just two curved lines joined together. And I also painted the edges of the watercolour panel with brown paint to create a border. This is something I like to do and is completely optional. I used here multiple shades of green, because my watercolour paint set contains quite a few greens, however if you only have one green, you can mix in brown or black to make it darker. You could mix yellow and blue to create green. You could create the last row fully brown or black. Actually you don’t have to use green at all, you can use purple, blue - which I think would look great for Christmas or winter cards or you could use reds, yellows and oranges if you want those autumnal colours. So there are plenty of options when it comes to colours. To finish up the card I stamped the greeting. I used the words "Have A Great Day" and I stamped it below the painting using a black ink. If you don't have stamps, you could write the greeting yourself or not add the greeting at all. Lastly I adhered the panel on top of a card base using a double-sided tape. I used a craft card stock for the card base, I thought it matched the green forest very well. I hope you will try making this card yourself.
