Trying Out Watercolour Products From LIDL & Painting Berries | CHRISTMAS CARDS 2023 - #7 + VIDEO15/12/2023 I live in a small village and the nearest place I can get some art and crafting supplies is Lidl. If you don't know Lidl, it's a supermarket similar to Aldi and every week they have selection of products that is not connected to food, such as art supplies. I already bought watercolour paints in tubes, watercolour pencils and not long ago I bought I got watercolour markers. I wanted to use the markers for my Halloween card, but I forgot and when I was trying them out for my Christmas card, I thought let's try out the other products and see how they look next to each other. I did not paint anything complicated, just simple berries. Especially due to the markers, which I don't think can be used on anything larger. I usually use similar markers for colouring of smaller objects. While for the painting I used products from Lidl, the watercolour card stock is from another store. Unfortunately the watercolour card stock from Lidl is not the best. It's only 190gsm and even though I didn't use too much water when painting the berries, I still prefer a heavier card stock. So I used different card stock from Flying Tiger. This is also a budget store and the card stock they sell is 300gsm, much better. All the berries I painted the same way. I was painting circles, mainly clusters of three or two, but some were single berries with two leaves. To make it easier to create the circles I used a lid from a marker. A different marker as the watercolour markers have this thing on the lid to stop them from rolling away. I applied the paint on the lid and stamped it onto the watercolour paper. I did this only with the markers and the paints. With the pencils I just traced the lid. You can paint the circles free hand if you want. I did that with the smaller berries. After I had the circle outline, I filled the circle with the colour, trying to leave a little highlight at the top, which didn't work all the time. It didn't work not because of the paints, but because I often forget. You can always use a white gouache or a gel pen to add highlights, but here I didn't care too much. The markers and the pencils I first applied over the circle and then using either a water-brush pen or a damp brush I went over it to activate the colour, which smoothens it out. The berries suppose to be holly. At least it's the only winter berry I know that is red. Mistletoe to my knowledge has only white berries and what I definitely knew, is that I want to paint red berries. The problem with the holly is that it has a bit complicated leaves and I wanted the leaves to be quick and simple. I didn't look up if there are other berries, what I did is, I remembered a painting with a berry background I saw on Instagram, it's by @creativadri. The person painted just simple leaves and I took it as an inspiration for the leaves. You can see the background here. Because I copied the leaves, my background and this background look very similar. That's why I wanted to mention it at least in this blog. The amount of leaves you paint is up to you. The single berries had two leaves and the rest between three and five. I also painted a few lighter single leaves in some of the white spaces. This was a direct inspiration from that background I mentioned. You could also paint clusters of dots, like I did on my previous card. I finished up the backgrounds with adding a bit of splatter. This is something I like to do, but you can skip it. Actually I added the splatter only on the background painted with the markers and the watercolour paints. After the painting was done I die cut the panels with a stitched rectangular die and I adhered them directly on top of a craft card base using a liquid glue. I used a Swedish greeting that I printed and then cut out with my scissors. The greeting I adhered in the middle using a foam tape. You can see that the main difference between these watercolour supplies is the vibrancy of the colour. As well as the shades. I think the pencils look the most natural. The paints have more pastel vibe, they are a bit muted and the brightest are the markers. Of course I'm only talking about the red and green. The pencils and the paints contain twenty four colours and the markers come in a box of eight. What is my verdict on this supplies? I like them. Are they the best? Of course not. As far as I remember each cost less then ten dollars/euro. So I don't expect a high quality. The question is - can you paint with them and the answer is yes. I've seen people using them on more complicated paintings than mine. You just need to be aware that you are using low quality products. I definitely will be using them again. I still have those watercolour crayons to try out. I hope you will try making this card yourself. Make sure you check out my video on YouTube and give it a Like as well.
