Not everyone likes cards with the typical Christmas images, therefore I thought a winter card with a very simple watercolour forest is a great idea, if you do not like such cards. Especially since right now it looks like Winter Wonderland, where I live. The idea for this card is to paint the trees and night, snowy sky at the top half of the card and leave the bottom part white, or as white as it gets. I taped my card stock to a board using a washi tape and then I began painting. You could also use the tape for the middle of the card stock to separate the panel and keep the line straight. I didn't do that and I had no problems keeping the line straight. First I worked on the sky and I started with the wet on wet technique. I used a clean flat brush and I applied a clean water across half of the watercolour panel. Then I used a dark blue paint and I painted the sky, creating a gradient. And to make the sky more interesting, I used a purple paint and I dropped it here and there and let it blend with the blue by itself. I let it dry and then I painted a second coat. Here I did the wet on dry technique and I used more saturated paint. I applied the paint in a dabbing motion, to create cloud like texture. I mainly did that at the top part of the sky. You could also do a smooth application over the whole sky, this is just a look that I like. I was also decreasing the saturation and creating a gradient towards the bottom. This is mainly to make sure the trees will be visible. Here I made a little mistake. I dried the panel and then I realized that I wanted to paint some misty trees in the background. This is not a huge problem, but if you would like to paint those misty trees do that while the background is still wet. What I did instead I diluted the blue paint with water to make it lighter and I painted the trees that way. You could skip this step, because you could not see the trees in the end at all. Happens to me quite often After the trees were dry, I used more saturated blue and a little bit of black and I painted the dark trees in front. To paint the trees, I started with a short line at the top and then in a zig zag motion, I pained the branches. As I was making the strokes, I was creating wobbly, wavy lines. I painted six trees in different sizes, how many you decide to paint is completely up to you. You could leave it as it is, but I wanted the bottom to have more blended look and I also wanted to create more visible line for the ground. I applied clean water below the trees. My trees were mostly dry, so the colour didn’t combine with the water as I wanted, so I used a little bit of the blue paint and I added it below the trees. And then with a clean brush I blended the colour into white. I was making sure the blue is only below the trees. There is very, very light blue further below it as well, but is not too visible. To do that, I was cleaning my brush, drying it out and lifting the colour and spreading the clean water towards the bottom. Since this is a winter scene, I could not leave it without any snow. After the panel was dry, I picked a white gouache, mixed it with water and splattered droplets across the sky. And not to get any of the white gouache on the bottom part of the panel, I covered it with a paper towel. Again I let the panel fully dry and then, I die-cut it using a stitched rectangular die. This is another step that you can skip. For the greeting I picked a stamp that says Warmest Wishes. I wanted something smaller, below the tree line and this sentiment stamp was perfect for that. If you don't have stamps, you can write the greeting with a black pen. Lastly I adhered the panel on top of a white card base using a liquid glue. I hope you will try making this card yourself, it's really simple and quick to make. I actually made a few as I enjoyed the painting process. And if you have any questions, just drop me a line.
