I know, winter is almost over, but since for the past few weeks I was making cards for Valentine's Day, I wanted to make a few wintery cards. I really wanted to make a card with a winter landscape, especially with a tree without any leaves as a focal point. The hills, the pine trees and the flowers were pretty much an add-on, so it's up to if you will paint them in. This card is perfect for beginners and I'm saying this as a beginner myself. I was postponing painting this as I was a little bit intimidated and after I finished painting I didn't know what I was worried about. It was very easy to paint. The products are minimal, all you need is a watercolours. I used the Gansai Tambi watercolour palette from Kuretake, but any watercolour paints will do. You will need watercolour brushes and watercolour card stock cut to the size of the card base. Of course you need a card base, an adhesive and if you have, a stamp with a greeting. The paints I used are: - Sky > light blue 64 and yellow 44 - Hills > blue 66 - Trees & grass > dark blue 67 - Brown Tree > brown 47 black 20 - Flowers > pink 36 I taped the watercolour panel onto a board using a washi tape and then I took a bigger brush and applied clean water over the whole panel. You want the card stock to be wet, but you don't want the water to be pooling. I started with painting the sky using a very pale blue paint and a little bit of yellow. I only applied the paint at the top, stopping around the place where the lowest point of the mountains will be. Most of the sky I painted blue and the yellow I added towards the bottom, but this is optional. I let it dry, which is important! After each layer or section I let the panel dry, otherwise the colours would be mixing. Next I painted the mountains, I started with a diluted blue and just scribbled a few hills in the background. I added more blue to the top and then using a clean wet brush I moved the paint towards the bottom, so it becomes clear. I painted mountain landscape before, if you would like another inspiration, you can check it out here. After the piece was dry, in the middle of the panel I painted two small hills. With the tip of my brush I painted two lines creating the top of the hill and then with a clean brush I soften the paint. This I did for every set of hills as I didn't want to have blotches of weirdly dry paint. Smoothing the paint with a clean wet brush, evened out the colour. I created this hill because I wanted to have a bunch of pine trees on top of it. Before I painted them I let the panel dry, which is not necessary here. When I paint trees like this, where the ground is visible, I like when the paper where the ground is, to be wet. This way the tree and the ground blend together. Since I let the paper dry, I had to re-wet the paper. Once the background was dry I worked on the tree. I created a sketch on a typing paper, I scribbled the graphite of the pencil on the back of it and then I traced it onto the watercolour card stock. It didn't transfer very well, so I had to re-draw a few branches. Normally you should do this before you start painting, at least that's what most watercolour artists I watch do, but I forgot. Then I mixed brown with little bit of black and painted the tree. Again, just like with the pine trees I wanted the bottom of the tree blend with the ground. I first added clean water, but then I also used blue paint, but I added a little too much of it, so I created another hill. The last thing I painted is the grass and red flowers, or berries. I'm not really sure what it is, I saw something like that on a desktop wallpaper and I liked it. With the tip of my brush I first painted the flowers. Just little red dots. I let it fully dry! And then, using a long bristle brush I painted the grass. I bought this brush last year, exactly for this reason - painting long thin lines. You can do that with a round brush, but most of the time I just don't have a steady hand. After the piece was dry, I adhered it on top of a card base that I made from a craft card stock and lastly I attached a banner with a Happy Birthday sentiment, which I adhered using a foam tape. The greeting I stamped and heat embossed in white. If you don't have a stamp with a sentiment, you can write your sentiment with a pen or leave it as it is, without any greeting. I hope you will try making this card yourself. Make sure you check out my video on YouTube and give it a Like as well.
