In the past few weeks, I've been using stamps for my cards, so I thought it's time to create a card where I paint something from scratch. The something in this case is an air balloon. This is a very simple card, if you are a beginner in watercolouring and card making this is definitely for you. The products you need are very minimal. All you need is watercolour card stock, watercolours and watercolour brushes. You will also need a pencil to draw the balloon and a thin paper. I used a separate card base, but you can use an A5 watercolour card stock and fold it in half. However, be careful as the card stock is thick and can crack. I started by drawing the balloon. I found a few images online and I tried to follow them. I started with the top, the balloon, which took me a few tries and a lot of erasing as I had troubles making it symmetric. It looked like the balloon bursted mid air. I wanted the balloon to be more round, but you can also make an oval shape as well. Then I drew the basket and four lines to represent the strings or ropes connecting the balloon to the basket. If you do not want to do any sketching, you can find and image online and print it out or if you have a balloon die, you can try tracing that. After I had my sketch, because I draw in my sketch book, I needed to transfer the image to another paper, so I can easily transfer the sketch onto my watercolour card stock. I flipped that paper and covered it with the graphite of the pencil. You do this if you are using a printed image. Then I placed the paper onto the watercolour card stock and traced it with my pencil and because there is the graphite on the back, it transferred the image onto the watercolour panel. Next I started colouring. I wanted to use colours that are more neutral that can be given to men or women, girls or boys, especially if you don't know what colours they like. However the colours are completely up to you. The other stripes I wanted to be off-white, so I decided to use very diluted grey. The ropes I painted black and the basket I painted brown. Once the piece was dry, I added a little bit of splatter, which is completely optional and then I also painted the edges of the card stock using mix of black and brown. I just like to add some kind of border to my panels, which is either adding another card stock in different colour behind the main panel, or using a stitched rectangular die to die cut the panel, or when using watercolours I tend to either use a washi to create a white border or paint the edges of the paper. After everything was dry, I stamped a greeting that says "Welcome Little One" and I stamped it with a black ink. If you do not have stamps you can either write it yourself or leave it without greeting. The greeting is also optional. And lastly I adhered the panel onto a card base that I made out of a craft card stock. You can also buy card bases already pre-made with envelopes. I hope you will try making this card yourself.
