Few weeks ago I made a card with a black leafs on a yellow background, inspired by minimal, abstract art. I really love this card, it’s so simple. The idea for this card came from Instagram, but searching on Instagram for specific things isn’t the best. Therefore I get most of my ideas from Pinterest and this is how found the inspiration for the card in today’s blog post. I didn’t follow any specific picture, it’s more like mix of few pictures together, none of them were hand painted. Minimalist, modern, abstract, boho art - these were my search terms. For this project I decided to try out acrylic paints. I bought cheap acrylic paints some time ago, just to try out dot mandala art, which I still have to do. I haven’t used acrylics since probably I was in the primary school, so the painting itself is not the best, especially the sun. I mean I already have troubles painting circles and staying inside of the lines. However I still really like the result. First I taped my card stock onto a panel, the card stock is the Canson XL watercolour. Then I squeezed the paints one by one onto a palette, some of them I mixed with white, just to lighten them up and I started painting. I started with the sky for which I chose, light orangey colour and for the mountains I picked red and white and for each layer I made the mountains darker. After each layer I let the paint dry and then I painted another layer. Let’s talk about the sun. In the video, I didn’t show you the whole painting, because it would not be entertaining to watch. I was struggling! Not only I had troubles staying inside of the lines, but also getting a smooth application. I don’t know what I was doing wrong, as I said I’m new to acrylic paints. One of the problems might be that the paints are quite cheap, but then I had no problem with the mountains. Who knows, I need to practice and I need to know when to stop. As I went through the video, I noticed that at one point the application wasn't too bad, but I kept going. The worse, I used my heat gun to try it and it created bubbles. I learned my lesson. After the paint was dry, I painted the brunch with the leafs. I was actually dreading this, I’m not good at painting leafs with watercolours or gouache, so with acrylics it might be even worse. So to avoid this, I tried using black markers and I’m still surprised how well it worked. I used a black fine liner for the brunch and the outlines of the leafs and then I filled them out with a black alcohol marker. I adhered the panel on top of a card base that I pre-made, using a craft card stock. And lastly I adhered a sentiment directly onto the panel, a strip of black card stock that I heat-embossed in white, no foam tape. That’s it, that’s the card. I hope you will give it a try, for sure I will make more of these. I really enjoyed acrylics and I love the texture! Acrylics are not really used in the card making world. Actually, I find it strange that I never seen a card maker using acrylic paints, it’s always watercolours, alcohol markers or colouring pencils.
