Stamping A Background With Individual Stamps & Messy Watercolouring Using Brush Markers+ VIDEO17/9/2020
I mentioned before that I have many older stamps that I want to finally start using. The problem is, I never know if it’s a good idea using stamp sets that are no longer available. All the card makers I follow work with the latest releases, which is little bit discouraging for a card maker who not only doesn’t work with companies and doesn’t have the money to buy newly released products herself, but also I also don’t even have an easy access to those products.
However, my thinking process is, when I use a product that is not available any more and you want to make something similar, then you either have to pick other stamp set with similar images or completely different stamp set. And even though I don’t mind people copying my cards, that’s why I have this blog. Using different stamp set makes your card more unique.
I picked a simple stamp set with butterflies from Clearly Besotted, I bought it years ago and only used the coordinating die. The idea for this card is to create a background using two of the butterfly stamps and watercolour each of the butterfly using different colours of water based brush markers and do a messy watercolouring.
The brush markers I’m using are the Sakura Koi markers, but you can use any other water based markers or watercolours. And except of some greys I used all the colours I had in my stash, which is not much, but I wanted to make the card as colourful as possible. Since I’m going to be watercolouring I’m using a watercolour card stock from Canson. Even though this is a cold press card stock, it’s still smooth enough, so I don’t always have to stamp twice. This is very important, because I won’t be using any stamping tool. You can if you want, but I didn’t want to constantly cleaning and re-positioning the stamps and therefore I decided to use acrylic blocks. I picked two stamps with the butterflies in two different sizes and I stamped them randomly across the watercolour panel. The ink I’m using here is the Versfine ink in Onyx black, which is a waterproof ink.
Also, because I will be doing messy watercolouring and didn’t want the colours to be mixing, I made sure the stamped images are spaced little bit further apart.
I knew that I’m going to be creating a label for the sentiment, but if you would like to stamp the sentiment directly on top of the panel, make sure you leave enough space for it, or even better, stamp it first and work around it. Once I was done stamping I started colouring. I applied the colour of the marker starting at the edge of the wing, stopping towards the middle. And then I took my brush and spread the colour across the wing, going outside of the lines. I’m using a water brush pen here, but you can use a normal brush as well. On the bigger butterfly I used one colour for the top wings and other for the bottom wings, but on the smaller butterflies I used same colour for all the wings. I did it simply because it’s easier. After I was done with colouring I let the piece to dry, which didn’t take too long. The body of the butterfly in these stamps is not filled and I was deciding if I should leave it as it is, or just colour it with a black marker. Eventually I decided to fill it in. I think it makes the colours even more intense.
To finish up the card I used a label with a sentiment that I pre-made. I decided to make bunch of labels using a black card stock that I heat embossed with a white embossing powder. I often find heat embossing sentiments such a hustle, especially when I’m heat embossing white on a black card stock. Therefore I decided to just pick a neutral sentiment and create few labels, so I have them on hand.
The panel with the butterflies I adhered directly on top of a white card base using a double-sided tape. The sentiment I wanted to have raised, so I picked few foam squares that I adhered on the back of the label. The label I also cut at an angle on one side and I attached it on top of the card. Of course I could have adhered few embellishments, like clear sequins. In true honesty, when I don’t use any embellishments, the likelihood that I forgot is quite high. It makes the card even more fancy, but it’s not a must. QUICK STEP-BY-STEP HOW TO
