Valentine's day is here in less then a month and as always I have a few card ideas for you. Not only for this occasion, but for any similar events, such as anniversary. And the card I made for this blog post, is actually for my husband for our anniversary. I had an idea to paint a cactus and I swapped the flowers for hearts. I feel like I say it in every blog post, but I like to make uncomplicated cards and this card is no different. It is perfect for beginners and budget friendly. To paint the cactus, you will need watercolour supplies, you don't need anything special or specific, use what you already have or what ever you can afford. This is what makes the card budget friendly, as you can adjust your supplies to your budget. The card stock I use is quite cheep, it's the Canson XL, while it's not the best I like it. However the paints I use are not the most expensive, but still pretty pricy and if I wanted to buy them now, I would not be able to afford them. You will also need a paper or a notebook, pencil and an eraser, because the first step is to draw the cactus. I do not have any downloadable sketch for you, but it is quite easy to draw. I like to draw in a cheap notebook first, where I can erase and adjust the shape until I'm happy with the look and then I copy it onto a thin paper, which I use then to transfer the drawing onto the watercolour card stock. In order to get the image onto the watercolour paper, I scribbled the graphite of the pencil all over the back of the paper with the cactus. Then I placed it on top of the watercolour card stock, I secured it with a washi so it doesn't move and then I went over the lines with my pencil. And this is how you can transfer a drawing or a printed image onto a watercolour or other card stock. After I transferred the image, I started the watercolouring. I used one green for the cactus, orange-brown for the pot, brown for the soil and pink for the hearts. I picked a size 4 brush, which is quite good for the size of the image. To paint the cactus, I applied a base coat of the green paint, doing the wet on wet technique. If you would like the colour of the cactus to be lighter you can just add this one coat. I wanted the cactus be darker, so I applied additional coat and I also did a little bit of shading. I applied the darkest shade on one side of the cactus and where the cacti were overlapping. Here I also added a little bit of brown, to make it even darker. I applied two coats of the paint on the pot and the soil as well and when I was painting the pot, below the rim I used a dark brown. Once everything was dry, I painted in the needles or is it called spines? Spines sounds very strange to me. I didn't want to make it too complicated, I even googled some ideas. In the end I mainly painted dots all over the cacti and at some places, using the top of the brush I did small strokes and painted in a few clusters of needles. I let that dry and then I stamped a greeting. I found a small stamp that says Love You and I stamped it with a black ink. This is completely optional, if you don't have stamps, you can write it yourself with a fine liner or leave it without any greeting. I think the card looks great with or without it. Lastly I adhered the panel on top of a card base using a simple double sided tape. The card base I made myself out of a craft card stock, but you can buy card bases already pre-made, with envelopes, if you do not want to make them yourself. I hope you will try making this card yourself. Make sure you check out my video on YouTube and give it a Like as well.
