I had so much fun painting the cactus on a beach, so I decided to make one more card with the theme of summer and cacti. A watercolour sunset with silhouettes of cacti. This is a very simple card, perfect for beginners. Also do you say cacti or cactuses? I’m sticking with cacti, sounds smarter. The products you will need are watercolours, watercolour paper and brushes. To create the stars I used a white gouache, but you can also use acrylic paints or white gel pen. As I always have troubles to paint neatly when the images are smaller, instead of using the watercolours to paint the cacti, I picked a black alcohol marker, which gave me more control. However, you can always use watercolours, if you do not have any black marker. Just keep in mind that the colours will not be as vivid. I attached the watercolour card stock that I cut down into an A6 size panel onto a board using a painters tape and I started painting. Originally I thought, I will use more colours to make a really vibrant, multi-colour sunset, but I eventually ended only using mid-tone blue and orange-yellow. I tried using pink and purple, but they weren’t mixing with the blue very well. There are so many colour combinations you can use for the sunset. You can of course follow my colour combination, or find a photo or painting and follow that. I started with the blue and I covered the bigger half of the panel. Then I used the orange-yellow and I painted the bottom part of the panel, leaving a little white gap between the blue and yellow, as I didn’t want those to be mixing. I applied two layers of the paint and then I let it fully dry. Next I added the stars. I only wanted the stars to be on the blue part of the sky, so I covered the yellow part with a paper towel. I mixed a white gouache with a small amount of water, I dipped a damp brush into the paint and using my finger I tapped on the brush to sprinkle a few droplets over the panel. I also used the top of the brush to add additional stars here and there and then I let it dry. Once the piece was dry I painted in the ground and the cacti. I used an alcohol marker on both, as I wanted the cacti and the ground to be the same intensity. For the ground I first drew a squiggly line to create a small hill and then I coloured it in. I painted two cacti, the main cactus was slightly bigger, with multiple branches and the smaller cactus, was the exact replica of the one I painted on my other card. So I don’t mess it up I first use a pencil and drew an outline of the cacti and then I took the marker to fill it in. I used the Altenew alcohol markers, which have a brush tip and I found it easier when I tilted the brush and only used the tip of the marker. Also rotating the panel as I was painting the brunches helped a lot. I adhered the panel on top of a card base that I pre-made and pre-scored using a craft card stock. And lastly I adhered a black banner with a Happy Birthday sentiment that I heat embossed using a white embossing powder. I adhered it at the top of the panel, also using a double-sided tape. The card is finished! I Think this card is quite neutral card and can be given to anyone, but I think I would probably give it to a guy.
