Bokeh Background Using Stamps And Distress Inks | Distress Ink Stamping And Reactivating + VIDEO12/6/2021 I had completely different card in mind for today’s blog post. I have been playing with a stamp set with geometric stamps and when I was trying out the solid circle stamps I came up with a cool background that I had to share with you. I created a background with the bokeh effect, which is the blurry background with circle lights that you get in photos. I used the technique where you stamp with Distress inks and activate it with water. This created a really cool background, which I have never seen used before for the bokeh effect. Normally people create a background using watercolours or Distress inks and then they use a stencil with different sizes of circles and white pigment ink to create those blurry circles. This looks absolutely fantastic, I used this technique myself as well on a Christmas card, which you can see here. Usually you would use solid stamps with dye or pigment inks, but I own only few and I will be using them in my next blog post. The majority of inks I have are the Distress inks and these are not the best for stamping, except when you stamp and re-activate with water. The colours of the inks are up to you, I wanted to keep the theme of masculine and Father’s day cards. I made two cards for this blog post, one green and one blue-grey. I probably picked too many shades, especially for the green background where I picked seven inks. I just could not decide. The card stock is the Canson XL watercolour paper. Since, I will be reactivating the inks with water, it is important to pick a card stock that can handle water and also that is smooth, for the stamps to stamp well. The stamp set I’m using is the Going Graphic by Create A Smile. While this stamp set is no longer available, they offer something similar and in my opinion better, as the stamp set has additional shapes and more sizes. And if you don’t have stamps, you can also use stencils with various sizes of circles. I taped my card stock onto a board using a painters tape. First of all I wanted to prevent warping once I add the water and I also wanted to have crips edges. I used circles in three sizes. I wish there was a size between the biggest circle and the middle one, but it wasn’t a huge problem, just my wish. If you have different stamp set or stencils, you can experiment with that. I stamped randomly, starting with the biggest circle, then the middle and lastly the smallest. I stamped few of them in each colour. I stamped a lot of circles. The amount of circles you stamp is up to you, also it depends on the size of the stamps or stencils you are using and also the ability to know when to stop. Which as you see I do not posses. Next I used a spray bottle to spray the background to reactivate the inks and with a damp brush I spread the water on to the panel. If you don’t have a spray bottle, you can use a jar of water and apply the water with your brush. The stamped circles kept their shape, but are much softer and because the water activated the colour I was able to use my brush to spread the colour across the background and then I let the panel air dry. This is how you create this background. If you have a stencil and white pigment ink, you could also add some white circles as well. You could create several backgrounds with different colours, there are so many options. I also created few backgrounds in different colours when practising this technique. To finish up the cards I kept it simple, I added a big bold sentiments. For the green background I used a sentiment that says Celebrate and I heat embossed it with a white embossing powder. And for the blue background I used a Happy Birthday stamp, which I stamped with a black ink. For the card bases I used a craft card stock and I adhered both panels on top of them using a simple double-sided tape.
