Some time ago I bought two very similar stamp sets from Clearly Besotted. One with tulips that I used in my previous blog post and the other with daffodils that I’m using today.
Unfortunately these stamp sets are no longer available. It takes me a while to use a stamp set after I buy it and taking a year break from card making, didn’t really help to speed up the process. However, my cards are not really about the stamp sets, they are just about the idea and the colouring medium. I’m sure you can find a stamp set that you can use and do something similar. For the tulips and the daffodils I kept the same theme. I didn’t like the look after I die cut the flowers, so I came up with a frame, to hide the bottom part of the die cut. I was going to use the alcohol markers from Altenew on this card as well, but since daffodils are either yellow or yellow and white, I didn’t have such colours in my stash, thus I decided to use colouring pencils.
To stamp the flowers I used the Gina K. Amalgan ink and for the card stock I used the Bristol card stock from Canson. I really like this card stock, when I use colouring pencils as it’s smooth.
I have both Prismas and Faber-Castell Polychromos and for this card I choose the Prismas. I don’t like to mix them up, because one of them is wax based and the other is oil based. The way I pick which ones to use, is I check my colour chard and look up the main colour, I want to use. If the main colour I like is from Prismas I pick Prismas for the other colours and visa versa. I picked three green shades for the stems, although two or even one would be completely enough, since the stems are not too big. I picked PC 913, PC 912 and PC 911. And the flowers I wanted to be yellow, so I picked yellow and orange colours, more precisely PC 916, PC 917 and PC 1034. The colouring took me about 20 minutes and once I was done I die cut the flowers and the frame.
I don’t have a specific die to cut out the frame, so I took a circle die and a scallop die, put them together to create the frame and run it through the die cutting machine. You can use two simple circle dies, you don’t have to use a scalloped die, but I actually lost the scalloped dies few years ago and last year it appeared out of nowhere. I was really happy that I found it, therefore I had to use it.
For the frame I used a black card stock, but you can use what ever colour you want. I just thought it matches nicely with the black outlines of the daffodils. Next I did the same thing I did on the card with the tulips. I used Distress inks and coloured the background behind the frame. I wanted to create sky and grass background and for that I used blue and green inks, but you can use what ever colour you want, or leave it white. Colouring the background is completely optional.
I blended the inks directly onto the card base and I used a cheap blending tool I bought in a make up section of something like a euro or dollar store.
To make sure I don’t blend the inks outside of the lines, I first jotted few pencil lines for the circle and the placement of the blue and green colours. It didn’t look super neat and you could see some white spots, but after I adhered the frame and the flowers, you could not really see it anymore. I adhered the frame and the flowers using a double-sided foam tape. The stems of the daffodils I tacked behind the frame, but the flowers I kept outside of the frame. Again, when attaching the tape onto the frame, make sure you leave enough space at the bottom part of the frame. This way you can easily tuck the flowers in. The stamp set comes with nice sentiments for Mother’s Day, but I decided to use the same stamp set that I used on the card with the tulips. The stamp set is also from Clearly Besotted, called Sweet Sentiments Plus, but again, it’s no longer available. Lastly I used few clear drops from Pretty Pink Posh to add little bit of sparkle to the card. Two of the drops I adhered inside of the frame and one outside. To adhere the drops I used the Multi Medium Matte adhesive from Ranger. VIDEO TUTORIAL
