Mother's Day in the UK and Ireland is in March, or more precisely, it takes place three weeks before Easter on the fourth Sunday of Lent. I do not send my Mother's Day cards on this day, because my mum as well as my husband's mum live in Germany, where this day is celebrated on the same day as in the US, sometime in May. However, I lived in the UK as well as in Ireland and therefore I make Mother's Day cards in March. Actually, this year I'm starting quite late as I skipped one upload in February. Not all of them will be made specifically for Mother's Day, actually not even on a card that I'm giving my mum, I used a specific sentiment for this occasion. The theme of these cards are flowers, some with spring flowers - simply feminine cards. The greeting you add, is completely up to you. Before I start, this card is one more card for the #CardsForUkraine that was started on Instagram. If you want to see my first card, just click here. Since I made this card I found out that the national flower of Ukraine is a sunflower. Sunflower is one of my favourite flowers, so I had to make a card. As I said in my original blog post, I know this does absolutely nothing. All this represents, is that I'm thinking of people of Ukraine. I'm worried about my family in Slovakia, who btw. are not worried at all. And I just can't imagine how people in Ukraine must feel. It's just scary times we are living in! But let me now tell you how I made the card. It's very simple. I didn't go and buy new stamp set, I re-used an old one from Clearly Besotted. I really like this stamp set and I like to colour it. I stamped it onto a watercolour card stock. The card stock is quite rough, so I had to use my stamping tool. I use it most of the time as it's easier to stamp, but in this case it was necessary as I had to stamp a few times. Luckily I finally unpacked a new Versafine ink and I only had to stamp two or three times. On my trial card with the old ink, I had to stamp more than five times. It was really time to change it. I bought it when I started card making and while I do not craft every day (I craft mostly during weekends), I still make a lot of cards every year. The Versafine Onyx black is my most used ink and it lasted me over six years. I decided to colour the flower with the Zig brush markers, which are water based markers. You can think of those as watercolours in a marker form. They can be used with water, but don't have to. There are other brands that makes these markers, the Zigs have rally small and thin brush and are great on tiny images. The exact markers I used are: - 62 dark brown, 50 yellow, 72 beige, 32 persian blue, 31 cobalt blue, 44 deep green and 91 light grey. I started with the brown middle and I added the paint through the most of it and then using a water brush pen I spread the colour across the whole circle. If you do not have a water brush pen, you can use a normal brush and a jar with clean water. For the petals I used two shades of yellow, one bright, one dark. I applied two layers of the colour. First I painted the petals with only the bright yellow. I applied the colour to about half of the petal and with the water brush pen I spread the colour across the petal. For the second layer I painted the bottom of the petal (or places that would be naturally in shade) with the dark yellow and above it I used the bright yellow. I didn’t apply the marker to the top of the petal, because I used the water brush pen and from bottom to top of each petal, I applied clean water. This combines the colours of the two markers and it also spreads the colour to the top of the petal. And I pretty much repeated this process, for each petal. The smaller flowers I painted with two shades of blue, but I didn't use any water. The petals are very small and this way it was much easier. I simply blended the markers together. For the leaves I used only one shade of green, which I applied at the bottom of the leaf and then with the water brush pen I spread the colour throughout the leaf. Lastly I used a light grey marker and I applied the colour along the edges of the whole flower and with water I spread the colour a bit to create a light grey background. This is pretty much optional, I just wanted to have little bit of colour in the background. To finish up the card I stamped the greeting. The stamp set with the sunflower has quite nice sentiments, but I wanted to have something more neutral. I picked another stamp set from Clearly Besotted, with bunch of sentiments and I stamped the words "With Love" at the bottom of the panel using a black ink. Next I trimmed the panel to be slightly smaller than the card base. I find it easier to adhere. Then I attached the panel on top of the card base that I made out of a craft card stock. I hope you will try making this card yourself. Make sure you check out my video on YouTube and give it a Like as well.
