Create A Simple Background With Hand-Drawn Leaves | DIY Birthday Card For Beginners + VIDEO15/4/2023 A few years ago I got a book "Botanical Line Drawing" by Peggy Dean to learn how to draw. This book has very simple step by step guides of how to draw, which is perfect for me. In typical fashion of mine I hardly ever used it, but I want to change it and integrate some of the drawings into my cards, starting with the card in this blog post. For my first drawing I decided to draw a leaf and create a background filled with leaves. I started drawing them with a pencil, just to be able to get the shapes right and erase if needed. I also didn't need to be exact, I only drew basic shapes with the stem being only a simple line and I didn't add any details. Once I was happy with the look I went over the pencil lines with a black fine-liner. In the step by step image below you can see how I drew the leaves. You can draw the stem as a single line, but I followed the instructions in the book and the stem is a little bit thicker with space in the middle. After I drew the stem I filled it in with straight lines. Next I drew the outline of the leaf and then I drew lines on both sides of the leaf. I drew the leaves slightly curved, but this is completely up to you. To colour the leaves I used the water-based markers from Zig. Using water-based markers is a very quick and easy way to colour your images, doesn't matter which brand you are using. I applied the marker over the inside of the leaf and then using a water-brush pen and spread the colour with the brush. You can also use a round brush and water in a jar. And if you do not have such markers, use normal watercolours. I used three different shades of green and after I was done and the leaves were dry I used a dark brown and coloured the stems. Here I didn't use water, I only used the marker. I let it dry again and then I added a little bit of splatter across the panel. To be able to create the splatter I used an acrylic block (any slick surface will do) and scribbled the water-brush marker over it. I mixed it with a few drops of clean water and then I created the splatter using a round brush. Next I run the panel through the die cutting machine using a stitched rectangular die. I adhered the panel on top of a grey card base using a liquid glue and for the greeting I chose a Happy Birthday sentiment that I pre-made. The greeting is stamped on a black card stock and heat embossed in white. I cut it into a banner and adhered it using a foam tape. If you do not have stamps, you can use a white gel pen and write the greeting on a black card stock yourself. I think this background is great for masculine cards and by changing the sentiment you could create a Father's day card.
