A few weeks ago I saw a technique using embossing folders and crayons. I have similar products, but I don't have the exact supplies. I tried it out and sadly it didn't work. The main reason might have been the card stock as you need to have a slick surface. So I thought what else I can do with embossing folders and I came up with the idea to use Nuvo Shimmer powders and put them into the wells of an embossing folder and see what happens. Since not everyone has these powders, I also tried this technique with normal watercolours in pans. If you have re-inkers or liquid watercolours, you can also try those. And as I was already trying out watercolour products with an embossing folder, I tested Distress inks as well. You can use whatever embossing folder you want. I used an older embossing folder as it includes bigger snowflakes, which means less work for me. NOTE: This technique might stain your embossing folder. I even put the folder into a dishwasher and it's still stains my white card stock. However it's only pink, so I'm suspecting it's the shimmer powders. If that bothers you, use normal watercolours. If you have any tips on how to clean it, let me know in the comments below. USING SHIMMER POWDERS & EMBOSSING FOLDERSThe Nuvo shimmer powders are pretty much watercolours in powder form, similar to the Brusho powders, but in comparison to those, the Nuvo powders have shimmer in them. I picked a few powders in pink, red and purple and I sprinkled them in to the wells of the snowflakes, you don't need much as they are rather saturated. Not sure if a well is a correct term, but I hope you know what I mean. It's the images on the front side of the embossing folder, which is going to be the front of your panel after you run it through your die-cutting machine. After I sprinkled the powders in all the wells I used a pipette and added water into each well. Then I took a damp brush and helped the paint to spread across each snowflake. Next I put in my watercolour card stock. I used a card stock that I bought in the shop Flying Tiger, but you can use any watercolour card stock you have. I placed the watercolour panel on the back side of the folder (or the top side as you have it open - the clean side of the embossing folder) and I placed it facing with the front up. The front of the paper need to face the side where the colour is. The card stock was dry, I didn't add any additional water to the card stock. I run it through my die cutting machine, removed the panel and let it dry. USING REGULAR WATERCOLOURS IN PANSIf you do not have these powders (or even re-inkers or liquid watercolours) you can use regular watercolours. For this card I used turquoise shades, just to have a little bit of colour variety. I picked the Gansai Tambi watercolours from Kuretake as they have big pans and I needed more paint than usual to fill all the wells. After I added the paint to each well, the paint was not spreading across the whole snowflake, like it did with the shimmer powders. So I took a spray bottle and sprayed the background, just in case I didn't have enough water in the wells. Again I placed the watercolour card stock in the folder, run it through the die-cutting machine and let it dry. USING DISTRESS INKS As I was experimenting with embossing powders, I wanted to try Distress ink pads. While I could not do the same thing as on the previous cards - adding colour inside the snowflakes, I could add the colour around them. I was still applying the colour on the same side of the embossing folder as on the other two cards. I picked four inks Lucky Clover, Blueprint Sketch, Wilted Violet and Seedless Preserves. I have the mini ink cubes and I squished them on the embossing folder. I started with the green, then the blue and lastly the purples. Next I used my spray bottle and sprayed clean water across the panel. Then I placed the card stock in the folder - here I used the Canson XL watercolour paper, run it through the die-cutting machine and let it dry. FINISHING THE CARDS After the backgrounds were dry, I adhered all of them on top of white card bases. Since the Nuvo powders have shimmer in them, the pink card sparkles in the light. And while the other two cards do not have any sparkle in them, I really like the look of both of them. However if you would like to add sparkle, since I used a spray bottle on both of them, you could add something like Liquid Pearls into the spray bottle, which will give it that shimmer look. To finish up the cards I die-cut a few snowflakes and the greeting using a glitter card stock. I wanted the greeting to be slightly raised, therefore I die-cut two additional greetings for each card from a regular card stock and I glued them together. The gluing was a tedious work as I don't have any of these fancy glue bottle tops or a glue pen, but I managed. I let the glue dry and then I adhered the greeting on top of the card base using a liquid glue. Some of the snowflakes I adhered using a foam tape, but most of them I attached with a liquid glue. I hope you will try making this card yourself. Make sure you check out my video on YouTube and give it a Like as well.
