Fun Masculine Cards | Creating A Card With A Wreath Using Tiny Stamps | Father's Day Card + VIDEO12/5/2021
I don’t really receive any comments on my blog or my YouTube channel, so sometimes I have difficult time deciding on what to do next, what cards could bring something valuable to others. But time to time I read comments on other blogs or YouTube channels and often I see that people have troubles with masculine cards.
Personally, I don’t have any problems making such cards, but now and then I like to look for ideas and inspirations. For that I usually use Pinterest and when I search for masculine cards, all I find are these stereotypical, monotone cards, often using pattern paper. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but to me they are little bit outdated. I like to make cards that are more cheerful, with little pop of colour. I just like cards that are fun! I cannot be the only one that doesn’t like such cards, therefore I decided to create series with masculine cards. This is going to be my take on masculine cards, because these cards can be given pretty much to anybody. But I like to give this type of cards to the men in my life.
My masculine cards have sort of the same formula. I create a full or partial background, using background stamps, solid stamps or individual stamps, especially those tiny stamps that are included in many stamp sets. I also like to use stencils as they create really cool backgrounds and are inexpensive. To add colour to my backgrounds I usually use watercolours or distress inks, either to add little pop of colour or cover the background completely.
And then I just add a sentiment, but most of the time I like to add a stamped image. Some kind of critter or similar, like monsters or robots. Of course the stamp set you use, depends completely on you and your taste and also on the person to whom you are making the card for. I tend to choose stamp sets that are cute and fun, something that I know the recipient would like. But do not focus on the stamps I’m using, focus on the whole idea of the card, because most of the time you can create something similar, with completely different stamps. And if you don’t have a good stamp set, but you like the background, you can always add a sentiment that you stamp or die-cut.
The main idea for the card today is to use the small stamps in a stamp set and adhere them around the main image, creating a wreath. I also created a background using Distress inks together with a starry stencil and an embossing paste.
I bought this cute stamp set with a bunch of guinea pigs, they are just adorable. The stamp set is from Gerda Steiner Designs and it’s called Week, Week Week. I really like stamp sets like these, with a lot of images, so I can make multiple different cards. I’m not using the sentiments from this stamp set, as I needed to make a Father’s Day card. But swapping a sentiment is the easiest thing you can do. I stamped the images that I needed, one of the guinea pigs and few of the little stamps with salad leafs and a tomato. I stamped them using the Versafine ink in Onyx black. The card stock I used is the Bristol smooth from Canson. To stamp the guinea pig I used the Mini Misti stamping tool, but to stamp the little images I just used an acrylic block. I needed to stamp bunch of them and since they are small, using an acrylic block is much simpler.
Then I coloured them with the Prisma colouring pencils. I didn’t do anything special with the colouring, just using two shades to create little bit of depth. I also wanted the guinea pig to be multi coloured, with few brown spots here and there.
Here is the list with the exact pencil colours that I used:
After I was done with colouring, I used my scissors and cut out all the images. I think there are coordinating dies for this stamp set, but I’m not 100% sure. The images are quite simple and were easy to cut out.
Next I worked on the background. I used a white plain card stock from Papermilldirect. It’s a UK paper company, I bought a bunch of card stock there few years ago. I assume, most people do not have such card stock, therefore I would recommend using any card stock that you find good for ink blending.
First I stamped the sentiment at the bottom of the panel. Since I am making a Father’s Day card, I searched my stash and picked a sentiment that was in the right size. Funny thing, I found only two stamps for Father’s Day and the other one was way too small.
Then I started by blending the Wild Honey Distress ink across the panel. I was trying to create sort of an oval shape, not going from edge to edge. The blending wasn’t perfect, there were some blotches of colour, but after I adhered the images, you could hardly see it. Once the piece was dry, I took the stencil and placed it over the panel, securing it with a painters tape. Using the painters tape, I also covered few of the stars at the bottom, just to cover the sentiment. And then I took an embossing paste and with a palette knife, I covered all the stars on the stencil. Then I removed the stencil and washed it right away, as I didn’t want the stencil to get ruined. I let the panel to dry, I didn’t check my watch how long it took, but I would say ten to fifteen minutes. You can use any type of embossing or texture paste. I used the embossing paste from Altenew, I bought it recently, I also have the Texture Paste from Ranger and both are a great option.
Next I attached a double sided foam tape on the back of the guinea pig, the leafs and the tomato. First I adhered the guinea pig. Before adhering the salad leafs and the tomato, I arranged them in a circle, just to make sure I am actually adhering them in a circle shape and then I adhered them one by one.
What you can also do is to use a compass or a cup to draw the circle. I would recommend drawing the circle after you apply the distress ink, otherwise you might not see it. Don’t worry, you will not see the pencil lines, since it’s going to be covered with the images. Lastly I adhered the panel on top of a card base that I pre-cut and pre-scored using a craft card stock. So there you go, my first masculine card idea for you. It’s cute, but fun and very easy to make! VIDEO TUTORIAL
