You might think that I have for you yet another Valentine’s Day card, but even though this card can be a card for this occasion, my card is an anniversary card. I made it for my husband for our wedding and first date anniversary, those share the same date. This is also my take or one of my takes on masculine cards and if you would like me to make a post about how I approach masculine cards, let me know in the comments.
For this card I’m back to using stamps and I used quite a few stamp sets, but the main one is a stamp set from Gerda Steiner Designs called Wheek! Wheek! Wheek! with very cute images of guinea pigs. However my cards are not really about the stamp sets, I needed a stamp with an image of a critter that can hold a heart. There are plenty stamps like these, there are even stamps where the critters already hold the heart. So search through your stash to see if you can find a critter that can hold a heart. To colour the image I decided to use watercolour pencils, I think they are such an easy to manage colouring medium. And since I used watercolouring pencils, I also used watercolour card stock and instead of normal brushes, I took out a water brush.
I stamped the image of the guinea pig onto the watercolour card stock using the Mini Misti stamping tool and Versafine ink in Onyx black, which is a waterproof ink. And then I started colouring.
I used two shades of brown, but if you only have one, that is no problem. Sometimes having fewer options is better. And I applied the colour across the whole guinea pig, starting with the dark brown along the edges and in the areas where shadows would be. Then I came in with the lighter brown and colour the rest of the image, leaving the middle, the tummy of the guinea pig without any colour. Next I took the water brush and activated the pigment of the watercolour pencils and move the colour across the whole image, including the area of the tummy, I only wanted the tummy to be lighter. Before I went across the tummy, however, I cleaned the brush using a paper towel, as I didn’t want to get too much of the pigment on the tummy. I also used a red pencil for the hands and feet, I wanted to use it also for the cheeks but I completely forgot.
After the piece was dry, I applied a second layer of the colour. This is completely optional, I just wanted the colours to be more vibrant. And once the piece was dry, I took my scissors and cut out the image.
As I mentioned, I wanted the guinea pig to hold a heart. I do have dies in the shape of an heart, but I don’t have a die cutting machine at the moment, I don’t have any stamps either, so I had to drew the heart myself, which was very simple. To make sure it fits into the hands of the guinea pig, I first stamped the image on to a thin paper, and I drew the heart. Then I covered the back of the paper with the graphite of the pencil and then I traced it onto the watercolour card stock. I coloured the heart with a red pencils, leaving the middle part of the heart white, to give it little bit more depth after the water is applied, something I did with the tummy. With the water brush I activated the colour, covering the whole heart. Once the heart was dry, I cut out the heart with my scissors and because I didn’t like the white edges on the paper after I cut it out, I covered it with the red pencil.
To make the card simple you could adhere the images onto a card base and stamp a sentiment, but I wanted to do something with the background. The only problem was, I didn’t know what. There are so many options. So I decided, with all those pencils lying around, to just colour the top middle part portion of the background with colours of the rainbow. I applied the colours in the rainbow order, trying to make sure that the complimentary colours are not next to each other. I didn’t want to end up with muddy colours after I applied the water. Once I was happy with the colour application, I took my water brush to activate the pigment.
You will need to use a card stock that can handle water for this. While I didn’t use a watercolour card stock, it can take small amount of water. However, if you are not sure, the best is to use a proper watercolour card stock. Next I thought, it would be great to have something that separates the background and the space where I will have the sentiment and I decided to create a banner, or actually two banners. One banner with diagonal black stripes, that I created by stamping a stamp from Clearly Besotted with diagonal stripes and the other banner was just black. Both banners I cut on one side, the stripy banner I cut diagonally and the black banner I cut into a ribbon end.
Then I stamped the sentiment with the Versafine ink in Onyx black, using the banners as a guide for the placement. The stamp set I used is from Avery Elle, called Peonies, I used the words Love You. Originally I wanted to use a stamp set with individual calligraphy letters, I think the one I have is from Concord & 9th, but I lost the letter “O”, which is rather important in the word “love”. I think it attached itself to something, when I was tidying and I could not find it. I lost quite a few stamp sets like this. Anyone has such problems?
After I stamped the sentiment, I attached the images. I could have used foam tape to adhere all the images, as I wasn’t sending the card, but I didn’t think about that. I send most of my cards, therefore I try to keep the cards less bulky, to keep the postage down. So I adhered the heart directly onto the guinea pig using a glue and the banner with the stripes I adhered directly onto the black banner. Then I attached those onto the panel with the rainbow background using a foam tape. Before attaching the panel onto a card base, I decided to draw black dash line boarder. I think it brings it all together and compliments the black sentiment and the black banner. And lastly I adhered the panel onto a white card base using double sided tape. VIDEO TUTORIAL
