There are occasions for which I have a hard time to come up with ideas, especially unique ideas and Halloween is one of those occasions. And on top of that I really don’t have a use for Halloween cards, I don’t celebrate it and I also don’t think that Halloween is a card giving occasion, unless you are making invitations. That’s why I only make them when I have a stamp set or if I come across something that inspires me, most of the time it’s another crafter’s card. The card I’m sharing with you today is such a card. I was inspired by two cards actually. The first one is from the blog of Gerda Steiner Designs, you can see it here. And the second one is a card Michelle Short that you can see here. Both cards did ink blending for the backgrounds and both cards created a moon. I went with the idea of the card Michell made as the ink combination was much simpler. I do not have any of the products Michell used, I think this was a Hero Arts blog hop and I do not own that many products from this company. However, that doesn’t matter, you don’t need to have the exact products other crafter used, to recreate something similar. TIP: My card turned out a little bit too similar to Michell’s card for my likings, mainly because I’m posting it online. The easiest way not to copy a card is to use a different stamp set, this works perfectly with flower stamp sets. Since no stamp set was used on the card I was inspired by, the best idea in this situation would be to create a card for completely different occasion. For example, if I used blue or turquoise colours for the blending and add snowflakes instead of the bats, I could create a beautiful Christmas card. And I might do just that for my Christmas cards. For the blending I used Distress inks: Black Soot, Dusty Concord and Wilted Violet and the card stock is the Canson XL watercolour paper. You can use any ink that blends well and if you do not have any inks, you can use watercolours. To create the moon I made a mask using a Post-It note with a full adhesive on the back and with my compass I drew a circle. When I was cutting it out I was very careful because I didn’t want any harsh edges, I wanted the circle to be as smooth as possible. You can use a die for that and if you are using watercolours, this type of stencil will not help. You will need to go carefully around the circle with your brush or use a masking fluid. I placed the mask onto the watercolour panel and I began blending. I started with the lightest ink and finishing with the darkest. The first coat was something like a base coat, I didn’t put too much pressure on the brush. I was just figuring out the colour placement. But with my second coat I started intensifying the colour. And then I was just blending it out. The brush I used for the blending is a cheap make up brush that I bought in a discount store. I removed the mask and then I was stuck with what to do next. Originally I wasn’t going to copy Michell, I was thinking about painting a tree silhouette, but then I changed my mind as I didn’t want to cover the moon. I could have left it as it is, but I wanted to add something more Halloween-like and the bats were the simplest option. I first had to learn to draw a bat, which wasn’t easy, but for sure easier than drawing a pumpkin or a scary house for example. After I had the shape of the bat figured out, I drew it on a black card stock and then I cut it out with my scissors. Before I adhered them onto the panel I first stamped and heat embossed the sentiment. Because I was using an embossing powder, I knew the card stock needs to be fully dry. I see other card makers drying it with a heat tool, but I have no patience for that. I prefer to let it dry over night or at least for a few hours and work on something else in the mean time. I adhered the panel on top of a white card base using a simple double-sided tape and lastly I adhered the bats over the moon using a double-sided foam tape. Michell’s card has a few additional things, but I decided to stop here and keep it very simple.
