Today I’m continuing with autumnal cards. Autumn is one of my favourite season, well I like every season if it is exactly as it suppose to be and I’m not in a city. Luckily, now I live in a village surrounded by forests, with autumn in full swing and it’s just beautiful. I painted four leafs in different autumnal colours. The idea comes from the YouTube channel Let’s Make Art, it’s an older video, you can see it here. When I was looking for ideas for cards with autumn theme, this painting popped to my had right away. They used gouache, I’m using watercolours, but the idea is the same. Again the supplies are minimal, you need watercolours, watercolour card stock, brushes and a pencil to draw the leaves. If you are like me and want to make a card, you will also need some adhesive and a card base. There are other things I used as well, but those are optional. I started by drawing the leaves, I drew four leaves. I could have drawn them myself by hand, but there are so many trees in our garden, I picked few leaves from the ground, pressed them in a book and there was my stencil. Using my pencil I drew around them, overlapping each leaf little bit with the other. After I was done I used my eraser and lighten up the pencil line as I thought they were too dark. Next I started painting. I did here the wet on wet technique, but instead applying clear water over the leaf first and then adding colour, I mixed water with the paint and painted the whole leaf right away. Then I picked more concentrated darker colour and while the paint was still wet, I added few dabs of colour here and there creating those interesting, organic patterns that you get with the wet on wet technique. I dried the leaf with my heat gun and then I painted the veins of the leaf. I was loosely following the pattern on the leaf that I used for the drawing. I used the top of the brush I was using, it has a very pointy tip, I should have been able to paint thin lines without any problem. Well, not really, my hand is not steady and I always paint the lines way too thick, especially on the yellow leaf you can see it. I should have used a thin long bristle brush, I used it on my trial piece and completely forgot. Also the colour I used to paint the veins, is the same colour I used on the darker spots. Since I’m talking about the colour, for the first leaf I used a lighter green for the main colour, called Sap Green and then I added a darker green, which is the Hooker’s Green. For the yellow leaf I used the Yellow Orche, this one is like mustard yellow and I added a dark brown, which is the burned umber. This brown was driving me crazy! Compared to the other paints, where when I added the water it created a pool and it stayed like that for a while, but with the brown the water was instantly absorbed, or was it absorbed?… it was leaking from below. I really don’t know what the issue is with this brown, but it is annoying. Also this might be a part of the problem why I could not get the lines thin, because I could not get enough colour on my brush. For the third leaf, the red orange leaf I used the Candium Red this is more like orange red and to that one I added the Burnt Siena, which is reddish brown. And for the last leaf I used the Burnt Siena and I also added a few additional colours, I added the dark brown that I also used to paint the veins. Then I added this dark red colour called Alizarin Crimson and lastly I added the Deep Candium Red. Except of the Hooker’s Green, all the colours are from the same watercolour set by Winsor & Newton. The painting of the leafs is done, to make the card, I stamped the sentiment. If you don’t have any stamps you can leave it out. At first I thought I will stamp it with a black ink, but then I decided to heat emboss it. As you do with heat embossing, I first treated the card stock with an antistatic powder tool. To stamp the sentiment, I used the Versamark ink, which is a sticky ink, then I sprinkled the embossing powder over it and I melted the powder using my heat tool. The embossing powder I used is the Metallic Brass from Wow. I adhered the panel on top of a card base that I made myself using a craft card stock. I adhered the panel using a simple double sided adhesive. The card is technically done, but to me it was still missing something. It might be because I watch videos by Kristina Werner way too much or because I recently bought bunch of gel pens and wanted to use them. I decided to draw a dash line using a gel pen that match the embossing perfectly, but I did not dare to draw it free hand, I had to use a ruler. And I do think that the dash line was a great finishing touch, it does bring everything together. And that’s it, the card is done.
