In my previous blog post I showed you how to make a template so you can easily create inserts for a clear mobile phone case. If you haven't see it, just click here. In today's blog post I want to talk about the pattern of the insert and how to make it. I really wanted to paint overlapping leaves using just one shade of green. And I painted them for a background not only of the insert, but I also made a card and you can do the same or make something completely different. For the painting you need watercolour supplies - watercolours, brushes, a card stock, water and a paper towel. Use what you already have or can afford. If you are making the insert, for some backgrounds you might want to first paint and cut it after wards. That's what I did here, but I made pencil mark using the template for the insert, just to know where I need to paint. I only made small pencil marks, but I would recommend to make them bigger and even outline the opening for the camera, so you know where to paint. And if you are making a card, you follow the same process, but instead of cutting it into an insert, you just adhere it onto a card base. I taped the card stock onto a board using a washi tape and I started with the wet on wet technique, creating a background that is more subtle and blurry. I used green, yellow and then I also added a little bit of blue. And I just dropped the colour into the wet paper and let it do it's thing and then I let it fully dry. The background however is optional. The leaves are quite simple. This is also a good watercolouring practice. You only need one shade of green and make it darker for each branch of leaves you paint. Originally I planned to paint three branches, but it felt empty on one side, so I added fourth branch. I started with painting the stem and I painted it slightly curved. I used a long bristle brush, but if you don't have this brush just use the top of a round brush. Next I painted the individual leaves. I started at the top and then I painted them on each side of the branch. I didn't do anything special with the leaves, like painting them more curved, they are all the same shape. You can paint them in different shapes and sizes, but this was suppose to be a simple painting. When I was painting the leaves I turned my paper upside down, as I find it easier to paint the leaves that way. At least I preferred it here. And once I was done with one leaf, I painted the next branch overlapping the other branches. As I was painting the additional branches, I added less and less water into my paint, making the paint darker for each branch. Once the leaves were dry, I added splatter over the background using the same colours that I used for the background - green, yellow and blue. And again I let the panel dry. If you are making an insert for your phone case, use your template, outline it, cut it out and place it into your case. I prefer to cut the rectangle with my paper trimmer, then round the corners with a corner rounder and only use the template for the cut out of the camera. You could also use the case itself for the outline. I didn't mention it in my previous post, as I thought of it later, even though it's very obvious. The best and fastest way would be to cut the rectangle and round the corners, then place it inside of the case and outline the opening. If you are making a card, there is one more step I did, but this is optional. I painted the edges of the panel using a gold paint. After the piece was dry I adhered it onto a card base that I made out of a craft card stock. Weather you decide to make a card or a mobile phone case insert, I hope you enjoyed this idea.
