I've been following a few Instagram accounts of watercolour artists where they predominantly paint leaves, brunches with leaves. It is impossible not to be inspired by that. That's where the idea for this card comes from, however I'm doing a simplified version. My leaf painting skills definitely needs more practice. This is very simple painting, perfect for beginners and doesn't require too many products. All you need are watercolours, watercolour card stock and watercolour round brushes. If you are beginner or like me have troubles painting with just the tip of a round brush, getting a long bristle brush in the size 2 (what I have) or even size 1, is something I highly recommend. Also to make the card you will need an adhesive and a card base. The card stock I used is the Canson XL watercolour paper that I cut down to four panels using my paper trimmer. Each of the panels is smaller than the card base (A6), this is because of the size of the block with the watercolour paper. The size of the block is A4, but this includes the spiral holding it together. To cut it down to smaller panels there are two options, either cut three in the size of the card base or cut four that are smaller the the card base, which is what I prefer to do. I attached my watercolour panel onto a board using a washi tape. And I began by creating a background, I didn't want a white background, but since I'm going to be painting leaves over it, it should not be too dark either. I did the wet on wet technique. I started by applying clean water across the panel and then I added drops of brown and green paint. Slightly darker at the bottom and lighter at the top. Once the panel was dry I started painting the leaves. I painted first a straight line, you can make them curved, so they look more natural, but I didn't want to do that. I wanted to keep it simple. I used a long bristle brush to paint the line, if you don't have such a brush, just use the top of your round brush. I used the round brush in the size 4 for the leaves, although I wish I had size 6, I think it would have been a little bit easier to paint. I painted the leaves on each side of the line and one at the top. I started with dark yellow leaves, then green, purple and brown. I left enough space between them and I waited until they are dry, before painting the next set of the leaves. I actually had a little bit of trouble painting the leaves. It was mainly, when I was filming (I didn't film every brunch, since it's repetitive). Sometimes I prefer to lean over the painting, but when the camera is in the way I can't. However, this time, even when I was able to lean over, I had a few problems. There was the usual, I am quite heavy handed and also often my hand shakes. Fun to paint straight lines. The main problem for me was, how thin the brush handle was. I used the brushes before, but when I was painting this time I specifically noticed that I had troubles holding the brush. I know you can buy ergonomic brushes, with a larger grip, but I don't need new brushes at the moment. I would prefer an attachment that you can add to your brush for better holding. If you have any suggestions, let me know in the comments. Anyways, let's get back to the painting and the card. After everything was dry I added a little bit of splatter, which is completely optional. Sometimes it looks like I add a lot of splatter (technically true), but this is because I am trying to cover a certain area and the splatter goes to other places. Then I adhered the panel on top of a card base that I made out of a craft card stock and I also adhered a greeting. The greeting says "have a great day" and I stamped and heat embossed it in white on a black card stock. I cut it into a banner and adhered it in the middle lower part of the card using a foam tape.
