I’m back to making cards completely from scratch without using any major stamps or dies. And I’m starting very simple by painting one of these modern or abstract (no idea what the correct term is) rainbows that I often see on Instagram and Pinterest.
When I see rainbows or rainbow colours, they always make me smile and I thought, especially these days, you need some joy in your life. I’ve been so tired in the past few days, it looked like spring is going to start, but it’s back to grey weather, which gives me headaches and makes me very exhausted. I wasn’t even able to do a voiceover for the video and only added music, I hope you don’t mind. I really like rainbows and these abstract rainbows are really fun to paint. So let me tell you how I made the card.
To paint the rainbow I decided to use gouache, simply because I didn’t want to add water to the paint. If you don’t have gouache, you can use acrylic paints, watercolours or even oil paints. I have never used them, but I think they would work too. For the card stock I chose the Mix Media card stock from Canson. I think you can use this paper for watercolouring as well, but I use it for projects that don’t require water. Recently I bought new brushes, a set with many speciality brushes and among those was a 1/4 inch flat brash, which was absolutely great for this project. The size was perfect. I also used a palette to mix colours, two jars with water and a paper towel.
In the video I painted two main designs, one tall rainbow and one side rainbow, these are the designs I will talk about in this blog post as well. However, as I was practising, I painted quite few of them and made additional designs, I will talk about them little bit later.
To paint the rainbows, the first step was mixing my own colours. I hate doing this, because I have no idea which colours I need to mix together to get a specific colour. I can do the basics, green, pink, purple, but anything more specific, I cannot do. Nevertheless I was pleasantly surprised by the colours I mixed.
The colours I used were red, dark blue with little bit of light blue, dark and bright green and yellow. The gouache set I have has very basic colours that are quite bright, I wanted them to be slightly muted, therefore I added little bit of brown to each colour. I’m not sure if this is the right way of doing this. Also I learned that to get mustard yellow, is to add orange, I will try that next time. The colours were nice, but little bit too dark, so the last thing I did was, I mixed in white. I didn’t mix it directly into the colour, I put some white next to the main colour and slowly added in the colour. This way I achieved the shade I wanted. To paint the tall rainbow, I started by attaching a painters tape onto the card stock. I didn’t attach it as you normally would, along the edges of the card stock. I only used the painters tape to make sure the bottom of the rainbow is straight. I also made sure I have enough space to stamp the sentiment, before attaching the painters tape onto the panel. Next I measured the middle of the rainbow and how tall I want the smallest arch to be. When I was practising, I was constantly ending up with a wide rainbow. The reason for this was, I painted the smallest arch too small and for a tall rainbow, the smallest arch must be high. That’s why I used a ruler and put a dot with my pencil about 4.5cm above the painters tape. This was the point where I wanted the curve of the arch to start.
I painted four arches, starting with the smallest arch, painting from inside out, but all the tutorials I saw, they were painting by starting with the biggest arch. So if you feel like you are struggling, when you stat with the smallest arch, try the other way. Also my hand was shaking, crazy shaking. It only happens when I try painting lines, straight, curved, doesn’t matter. But as I was painting, I noticed that when I was holding the brush certain way, where the handle was pointing away from me, my hand was shaking less. Turning around your paper instead of trying move your hand in an awkward way, helps as well.
For the next card I painted a side rainbow. Here I attached the painters tape on all four edges of the panel, but thinking about it now, having the tape only at the bottom and the right side would have been enough. I only wanted a straight edges, which didn’t work well. I think I didn’t pressed in the tape properly and the colour seeped through the painters tape. Therefore I decided to just cut it out with my paper trimmer.
I started painting right at the bottom corner of the painters tape. On my trial painting it just looked weird when I removed the painters tape. I also added one more colour, purple, as there was enough space for one more arch.
After both panels were dry I stamped a sentiment. Unfortunately I didn’t have an exact sentiment that I would have liked. I wanted to use the words “Sending Hugs”, but I had a stamp that says “Hugs & Kisses”, which is close enough. I stamped the sentiments using the Versafine ink in Onyx black. Lastly, I adhered the panels on top of a card base, using a double-sided tape.
As I mentioned earlier, I made few other cards with the left overs from when I was practising and also one additional design. The additional design is two smaller rainbows, one at the top of the panel, the other at the bottom, with sentiment in the middle. And from the practice pieces I cut out the rainbows, and I adhered them on top of the card base using a double-sided foam tape. Before adhering them I added a sentiment, which I heat embossed with a white embossing powder.
These are all the rainbow cards, I hope you like them and will try something similar. If you enjoyed this blog post and like the cards I made, share it with your friends! VIDEO TUTORIAL
