For today's card I have for you another card that I made completely from scratch. I hand drew a tulip and then I coloured it using colouring pencils. While it might be scary for some (including me) to draw your own images, this card is definitely for beginners. Plus it is another card idea that you can make not only for Mother's day. There are many flowers that rather complicated, but tulips are very simple to draw. I was following this image that I found on Instagram, but the leaves is sort of a mix of different photos and sketches. I'm a beginner when it comes to drawing and I'm looking for ideas and tutorials made for beginners. Let's face it there are not many, most of them are labeled as such, but when you watch it, you know right away that the person has no clue about what it is to be a beginner. However not long after I made this card Sandy Allnock made this video with a tutorial about drawing a sunflower, where she explained her process. She studied the shapes of the petals and drew some of them to have some variation, before she actually drew the flower. I never thought of doing this, probably because I'm impatient, but I will definitely implement this process for my next drawing. The way I drew this flower, I first drew the tulip in my practice book, just following the photo and surprisingly it looked OK. I was planning to do few more sketches and then draw it directly onto the card stock I was using for the card. However, I liked the drawing of this tulip and I decided to transfer it onto my card stock. To transfer an image, all you need is a thin piece of paper, you can also use a tracing paper and a pencil. I put the thin paper over the sketch and using my pencil I followed the lines. Here you can adjust the image, for example the tulip I originally drew was a little too big, so I had to slightly shorten it. After I traced the image, I flipped the paper over and scribbled the led of the pencil all over the image on the other side. Then I placed the thin paper over my card stock. I used the Bristol paper as I find it really good with colouring pencils. And I traced the image again, going over the lines of the tulip and this way I was able to transfer the image onto my card stock. Next I started colouring. I wanted to do the no-line look, but if you want you can use a black fine liner and go over the pencil lines. When it comes to the colour, I wanted to use either pink or purple and because I already used pinks for other cards that I will be posting soon, I chose purple. I have the Polychromos and Prisma pencils and as I haven't use the Prismas for a while, I decided to use them. The only problem is that the purple shades are not the best, as they are either way too similar or way too different. I said this before, when I'm colouring I don't think about the light source, all I want is to create a little bit of depth, so the image is not too flat. Mostly I go from the darkest to the lightest and if there is a place, where I'm pretty, there would be a shade, then I apply the darker colour. Also, I don't use colouring pencils too often and it's been a while I used them, I struggled a bit. Especially with the purple petals, the big petal right in front was rather difficult. A lot of blending went into it. I started with the greens and then I used the purples. For both I used three shades, however it wasn't a perfect match, I added fourth purple shade and I added it only to the sides of the petals as they were blending with each other. You can watch the video if you want to see the full colouring. After I was finished, I stamped the greeting, which is optional. I stamped it partially covering the flower, this is something I like to do. Lastly I adhered the panel with the flower onto a white card base. I was thinking adding some embellishments, but in the end I left the card clean and simple. I hope you will try making this card yourself.
