When I was thinking what cards I could make for Valentine's day I thought it would be fun to make a pink galaxy card. And that's what I made for the card in this blog post and I absolutely love it. To make this card you need watercolour supplies and a card base. I also used a stamp for the greeting and a wreath die-cut with hearts, but this is optional. You can just create a banner and write the greeting with a pen. Note: While I'm making a pink card, you can use other colours to fit the likes of the person you are giving the card to. For example, if you are making a card for your boyfriend, you could use blues and greens. I taped my watercolour card stock onto a board using a washi tape. For the first coat of paint I did the wet on wet technique, starting with applying clean water over the whole watercolour panel. Make sure the water is not pooling, if so use a paper towel to soak it up. You need enough water to get a nice light sheen. Then I used my lighter pink and I added that paint onto my watercolour card stock and as the paper was already wet, the paint reacted with the water and spread around by itself. I made sure that I left some spots without any colour, which you can often see in galaxies. I left multiple spots clear, but you could only do one. Next I added a darker pink and added it to some of the parts where I added the lighter pink and I let the panel dry. If you do not have a separate dark pink, you can just intensify the paint you already have by using less water. I let it dry and then I used more saturated paint, with less water. Switching between the pinks I applied the paint around the lighter areas, doing the wet on dry technique. The darkest pink I used mainly around the edges of the card stock, where I wanted it to be darker. Once I was happy with the pink, while the paint was still wet I went in and smoothen out the hard edges around the white areas. Not to contaminate the light parts, I cleaned my brush and using a clear water, I was going from the middle of the lighter area towards the pink part. As the pink and the clean water mixed, it smoothen out the edges. The paint and the water combined, so I was cleaning my brush in between in order not to get paint over the lighter areas. If you get paint where you don’t want it to be, clean your brush, dry it a bit with a paper towel and go back to those darker areas that you want to lighten up and soak up the colour, cleaning your brush as you go. While the paint was wet I used a dark purple and added it into some areas and then I let it dry. This is completely optional, you don't really see it, at least not as purple. As I was painting, with my brush I did a dabbing motion as I was applying the paint. I did this on other galaxy backgrounds that I made in the past and I really like this technique as it creates an interesting cloud-like texture. However on those cards I used different card stock and you could see that texture way better. Here I was using the Canson XL and the texture was not visible at all. Also as I was using a cheap watercolour card stock, therefore I had to be careful with how much water I applied. Luckily I didn't have any problems here, but it’s good to understand your card stock and what you can achieve with it. Some techniques will work and some will not or will look different. After the piece was dry, I applied my last coat of paint. I used black paint and I applied the colour around the light areas in a dabbing motion. In some areas I added a very light coat of black and in other I used more saturated paint. As I was painting I was also softening the lighter areas with clean damp brush and where I got too much paint, I did the lifting technique. If you do not want to use black, you could try dark blue or even the purple might work as well. I let the paint fully dry and now it was time to create some stars. I used a white gouache mixed with a little bit of water. You could also use acrylic paint. I dipped my brush into the paint and by tapping on the brush I flicked the paint over the background. Somehow I always manage to have problems when creating splatter for stars. I want them to be very tiny, otherwise it looks like snow. The size of your brush is important, the smaller brush, the smaller the splatter will be. I used a size two long bristle brush, which worked quite well. Maybe except the mess I was left with afterwards, white splatter all over my working area. You could use a toothbrush, which I would love to do as well. The problem is, I cannot find a brush with a flat bristles. Usually I find these fancy brushes with weird shapes. Again I let the piece fully dry and then I worked on the greeting. I used a sentiment stamp set that says Love You and I heat embossed it using a white embossing powder. If you do not have stamps, you could create a banner, maybe paint it with a black paint and write the greeting with a white gel pen and adhere it in the middle of the panel. Or if you have the Dymo label maker, you can use that. Just creating some kind of banner, so you can see the greeting, would be the best way to go. Lastly I adhered the watercolour panel onto a white card base and I also attached a die-cut wreath with hearts, which is completely optional. The wreath I die-cut from a white card stock, the die is from Avery Elle. I also have the die with stars and I absolutely love both and like to use it when the project is right. To adhere it I used a foam tape that I cut into very tiny pieces and placed it in the middle of the panel. I hope you will try making this card yourself.
