I wanted to paint another leafy tree and I came across a few photos of cherry trees and thought this would be a great thing to paint. I'm not good at painting trees, I just cannot get the shape right, it's always very round. Although such trees exists, there is one in front of my window, I would like to get a more uneven shape. I think the main issue for me is the size of the card, I just can't get myself to paint smaller and I end up not having enough space. Don't get me wrong I like the result, but since I didn't know how to start this blog post I thought I will share with you my struggles while painting. Maybe someone can relate. When I came up with the idea of painting the cherry tree, I immediately thought about doing the ink smooshing technique. I only know the ink smooshing technique in combination with Distress inks and when I tried it, it was too light and I wanted some parts of the tree to be darker. Therefore I decided to use normal watercolours to get more saturation. The process is the same as you would use Distress inks. I added a few drops of water into my watercolour paints, here I used the Gansai Tambi from Kuretake. I made sure the paint and the water are well mixed and then I took a big brush and transferred some of the paint onto a laminated card stock. Any slick surface would do, it just makes it easer to dip the acetate into the paint. Talking about an acetate. I cut a piece of acetate to a smaller size so it's easier to handle. You can also use clear packaging, which I want to try in the future as the acetate was a little bit difficult to manage and I ended up only using the corner of the acetate, especially when I needed to cover smaller sections. I first started with a lighter shade of pink, I dipped the acetate into the paint and smooshed it over my card stock building a messy round shape. You can also use a brush if the paint doesn't go where you want it to go. The ink smooshing helps with the randomness of the pattern. I also let some parts without paint to paint branches later. Once I was happy with the look I let it dry and then I used a darker pink shade and smooshed it over some spaces. I also used a brush to help me to spread the colour around. Here I was struggling a bit with the acetate as I needed to cover smaller sections. I let the piece dry and then I painted the trunk and the branches using a brown paint. The branches I painted in the spots where I didn't put any paint. While the trunk was wet I painted the ground using the pink paint and as the trunk was wet it combined with the pink. This creates a more natural effect. After the panel was dry I used the pink paint and splattered the paint over the panel mainly the bottom to represent falling leaves. You can also use a brush and just add some dots, for more controlled look. I like to add some paint along the edges of the watercolour panel to create a border. I used the brown paint for that. Next I stamped the greeting. I chose the words With Love, you can use what ever sentiment you want. If you do not have stamps, you can use a black fine liner and write the greeting yourself or just leave it without a greeting. Lastly I adhered the panel on top of a craft card stock using a liquid glue. You can see a quick video of me making this card on my YouTube channel or Instagram and make sure you subscribe/follow.
