The autumn is here and ever since the leaves started falling, I wanted to use them in my crafting, just like I did last year. Last year I did what I call leaf stamping using acrylic paints and this time I wanted to try using watercolours. Watercolours, compared to acrylic paints or gouache are more tricky and this technique can be hit or miss, because you are not stamping the leaves. However, even if it's a miss, you can still create a beautiful background. To make the background you will need leaves. You want the leaves to be on a thinner side, I found that thinner leaves work better. And you will need watercolour supplies. I made two cards and for one I used the typical watercolours and for the other I used the Nuvo Shimmer powders, which are watercolours in a powder form, they contain shimmer and are very vibrant. AUTUMNAL COLOURS USING NORMAL WATERCOLOURS To make the card with the autumnal colours, I taped my card stock to a board as I was going to do the wet on wet technique and I wanted to prevent warping. Then I applied clean water across the whole panel. You want the card stock to be wet, but you don't want the water to be pooling. In my video the second card is the better example of it. Next I started adding the colours. Red, orange, yellow, green, brown and even a little bit of purple. I applied them randomly and once I was happy with the look, while the paint was wet, I placed the leaf over the background and pressed it down. And then I picked more saturated paint and mainly painted around the leaf. I let it dry for a bit and while it was still slightly damp I removed the leaf... and it didn't look good. Not because I didn’t let it dry full, the impression wasn't the best and the colours weren't as vivid as I wanted. So I put the leaf back and I applied more colour, making sure I get the colour in the small spaces between the leaves. And again I let it dry. BACKGROUND USING NUVO SHIMMER POWDERS Excluding the drying time, creating the background is rather fast. It took me about ten minutes. So while I was waiting for the panel to dry, I decided to create one more card using the Nuvo Shimmer powders. I used them mainly because I was inspired by the colours form a video I watched, when I was looking for some tips and tricks for this technique. There was only one good video that I found, you can watch it here. Purple, pink, blue and turquoise always inspire me to use the Shimmer powders, as these and a red are all the colours I have. I started with applying a clean water over the whole background and then I sprinkled the powders. To get the powders out, you just need to tap on the bottle. Do not squeeze, as you will either get too much powder out or create a mess on your desk. The powders weren't mixing with the water well, so I used my brush and helped the powder move around. I also sprinkled more powder at some spaces and moved it around with my brush. Next I placed the leaves on top of the background and pressed them in. I actually placed small stones on top to keep them in place. And just like on the first card I applied the colour around the leaves. You can mix the powders with water, but I used the normal watercolours instead. LEAF STAMPING I let both panels dry over night. And when I removed the leaves... it was a disappointment. The first background had too much of white space and the impressions on the other background were hardly visible. It was not too bad, but it wasn't what I imagined. I was contemplating throwing them into the bin and starting again, but because they weren't bad backgrounds, I didn't want to give up. I decided to do leaf stamping using a white gouache. You can use an acrylic paint, but I have a big tube of gouache, so I used that. I applied the paint over the back of the leaf and then I pressed it on top of the background. After everything was dry, I adhered the panels on top of a white card base, using a liquid glue. And lastly I adhered the greetings. The words Just For You I used on the autumnal background, and Happy Birthday I used for the second background. I hope you will try making this cards yourself. This technique is really fun!
