I was struggling what to make for my last Christmas card of this year, not because I had no ideas, but with Christmas being just a few days away, I didn't want to do anything complicated, where you need to do special techniques or have special products that you need to buy first. I wanted a card that you can create at a last minute. I went through a lot of ideas and in the end my decision was made easier, when I received the Winsor & Newton Cotman metallic watercolours that were gifted to me by my husband's friend. I wanted to put them into a test and decided to paint a very simple wreath. In my video share my thoughts about the paints. NOTE: If you don't have any metallic watercolours, you can use normal watercolours and paint the wreath green or in any other colour. Or you could use a gel pen and draw a wreath like I did in a blog post here. Because the metallic watercolours look the best on a black card stock, that's what I decided to use. You can get a black watercolour card stock, but I don't have any, so I used another thicker black card stock. In this case it didn't matter, because I wasn't using too much water. The colours I used for the wreath are the Yellow Gold and Red Copper. I started with the greeting, but you can do that after you paint the wreath. I just wanted to have a visual reference where not to place the wreath. I used a Merry Christmas stamp for the sentiment, which I stamped and heat embossed using a Metallic Gold powder from Wow. Next I started with the wreath. First I painted the circle. I decided to just trace a cup with my pencil and then I used a long bristle brush and I painted the circle. The long bristle brush helps with thin lines, but if you don't have such brush, you can use the top of a round brush. Alternatively you could also paint in section without painting the line for the wreath or do the stamping technique, where you paint the edge of a cup and stamp it onto the card stock. After the circle was finished I painted the foliage. At first I thought I will only paint the leaves, but because of the tight space on the sides, between the circle and the edge of the card stock, I decided to paint a few pine tree branches as well. It was easier to squeeze them there. I also like to add berries along my wreaths. Mostly I add them at the end, just simple floating dots. But here I wanted to connect them to the wreath so I painted them as I was painting the wreath. I did that only with the clusters of three and the connecting lines and some additional berries I painted after I was done painting the wreath. To paint the leaves, I started with a curved line and then along the line I painted simple leaves. The shape of the leaf is up to you, what ever you feel comfortable painting. The shape I painted is sort of my go to leaf-shape. I repeated painting these shapes along the wreath switching between the berries, the pine tree branches and the leaves. Once I finished the wreath, I let it dry and then I painted second coat on some of the leaves. This was only because the gold on the greeting was more vibrant and second coat solved the issue. The gold wasn't matching hundred percent but it was close enough. I also painted the edges of the watercolour panel, this is something I like to do. And for that I used the Red Copper. Lastly I adhered the panel on top of a card base made out of a craft card stock. I hope you will try making this card yourself, especially if you need a last minute card.
